Warren Cardinal-McTeague (he/him) is Métis and Cree from the communities of Lac La Biche and Fort McMurray in northeastern Alberta and is proudly gay and 2SIQ (Two-Spirit/Indigiqueer). He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forest & Conservation Sciences at UBC Vancouver and holds a Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples, Governance & Environmental Relations.
A botanist by training, Warren works to enhance Indigenous Peoples’ capacity to conduct their own science (a key component of self-governing peoples) through collaborative co-produced research using advanced portable technologies for genomics and leaf reflectance spectroscopy.
He is also a co-lead for the Summer internship for Indigenous peoples in genomics (SING) Canada and co-founder of SING Sábme, and co-leads the Arramat Project’s Global Transformation Pathway T5 on Decolonizing Science and Education.
Warren also works to assert Indigenous data sovereignty and governance through his teaching, raising awareness across overlooked data types, and by rebuilding relations between Indigenous peoples and their data through care-centred art and storytelling methods.
